In our ranking, we present 14 proposals for romantic films divided into three categories. The titles were selected based on the highest ratings and popularity of the production. Upi’ll find here the funniest comedies, the best dramas and the greatest classics, all of them about love.

Netflix – the best romantic comedies

We start with popular romantic comedies. The list includes blockbusters, but also less popular (although not less successful) films of this type. However, they are all tear-jerkers – as it happens in romantic comedies, sometimes with laughter, sometimes with emotion.

Lost in Translation

This is a 2003 film directed by Sofia Coppola, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. This production neatly combines the features of comedy and drama. It’s about a middle-aged American who comes to Tokyo to shoot an advertisement. A young couple comes to the hotel where he lives. A busy husband doesn’t spend time with his wife, and she begins to suffer from insomnia. One night she meets the main character and they start talking to each other more and more. An interesting relationship starts to build between them. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2004 and several Golden Globes and other awards.

Definitely, Maybe

A romantic comedy combined with drama. The production tells the story of a single father, Will, who tells his daughter, May, about his three teenage loves. The girl’s task is to guess which of the partners in question is her mother. The choices are Emily, April and Summer. As Maya listens to her father’s story, she realizes how complicated love is. However, she also realizes that it is never too late to face the events of the past. This is a 2008 movie directed by Adam Brooks, starring Ryan Reynolds and Abigail Breslin.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

A 2018 production directed by Susan Johnson.this teen romance comedy original Netflix movie has two sequels. Starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo. The story is about a shy teenager, Lara Jean, who writes love letters to boys she loves. One day, private notes reach their addressees and become the subject of discussion at the girl’s school. This situation turns her life upside down. The actress who plays the main character received an MTV award in 2019 for her breakthrough role.

The Princess Switch

Starring in this film was Vanessa Hudgens, Sam Palladio and Nick Sagar. This is by far the biggest Christmas hit of Netflix, and it continued this trend for 2 years after its premiere, i.e. in 2020. Vanessa Hudgens plays two characters – Stacy from Chicago, a confectioner, and the future princess, Lady Margaret Delacourt. They both look the same, and the combination of events causes them to switch places. Girls have to adapt to new roles and situations. All this is intertwined with nascent love and the Christmas atmosphere. 

The Kissing Booth

It’s also a 2018 movie, this time directed by Vince Marcello. This is a light romantic comedy for teenagers, which has already had sequels (in 2020 and 2021). The main character is Elle, who has been friends with Lee for years. However, she falls in love with his brother – Noah, which significantly complicates her relationship with her friend. The girl has to face the struggle for a long-term relationship or choose a newly born love. Starring: Joey King, Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi.

Call Me By Your Name

This is an atmospheric melodrama set in 1983 in Italy, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. Sensitive and talented teenager Elio spends the summer with his parents in an Italian villa. He meets his friends, composes music and reads books. One day, Oliver joins the family and works on his PhD with Elio’s father. An unusual relationship develops between the main character and the guest. The production is an intimate and sentimental love story that won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was based on a novel by André Aciman. The premiere of this film, directed by Luka Guadagnino, took place in 2017.

Malcolm and Marie

A 2021 film directed by Sam Levinson,starring Zendaya and John David Washington. It is an atmospheric, black and white melodrama that tells the story of one evening in the life of an unusual marriage. Him, the filmmaker, and her, the disabled actress, return home after the premiere of the man’s latest film. Waiting for reviews, they start talking to each other, and the conversation turns into hours of discussions about their relationship. Hidden secrets and suppressed feelings come to light. The characters show a whole spectrum of emotions, so the viewer cannot turn away from the screen even for a moment. This is a unique original Netflix production, the minimalism of which comes from the fact that it was created in pandemic conditions.

Marriage Story

The drama focuses on the fate of a 10-year-old marriage between Nicole and Charlie. As with Malcolm and Marie, the story is about acting. In this case, the main character is a theater director, and his wife is an actress, starring in his plays. As they both receive new career opportunities, their marriage begins to fall apart and their strong relationship weakens. Laura Dern won an Oscar for Best Supporting Role for this film. This is a title from 2019 directed by Noah Baumbach, starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.

The Danish Girl

This is a 2015 film starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. Alicia Vikander was awarded an Oscar for her supporting role. It is a biographical drama based on the real events of a pair of artists – Einar and Gerda Wegener. The painters went through a real test of their feelings when Einar decided to undergo a sex transition. After the operation, he became Lili Elbe. Events took place at the beginning of the 20th century, making Lili one of the first transgender people in the world. The production won a statuette at the International Film Festival in Venice for the best film on a homosexual subject. Directed by Tom Hooper.

Netflix – the greatest film classics about love

The Notebook

2004 film adaptation directed by Nick Cassavetes. The film features Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, Gena Rowlands and James Garner. This cult melodrama was based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks of the same title. The story is about an elderly man with Alzheimer’s reading a diary, which describes the love story of a couple of lovers from North Carolina. A rich townswoman got involved with a not very wealthy young man from the countryside. A stormy relationship full of ups and downs has been very popular among viewers for years.

Pride and Prejudice

This costume melodrama, set in 19th-century England, was based in 2005 on the novel by Jane Austen. Directed by Joe Wright. To the town where the five sisters and their mother live, comes wealthy Charles Bingley. The mother of the daughters wants him to be interested in one of her descendants. When he falls in love with the oldest Jane, his friend, Mr. Darcy becomes interested in her younger sister, Elizabeth. It is a beautifully shot, extraordinary and timeless story that today can be undoubtedly classified as one of the classics of cinematic romances. On the screen you can see, among others Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

Dirty Dancing

The 1987 film, starring Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze. This is a musical melodrama about love, which probably everyone has heard of, directed by Emile Ardolino. The classic tells the story of teenage Frances who meets an attractive dance instructor. The couple fall in love with each other, and their love on the screen is surrounded by atmospheric music and passionate dance. The famous song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” was awarded an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

You’ve got mail

A movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, directed in 1998 by Nora Ephron. You’ve Got Mail is one of the world’s most iconic romantic comedies, set in New York City. The main character is the owner of a small family bookstore. One day, one of the city’s most popular online bookstores opens nearby. Its owner automatically becomes a professional enemy and competitor of the heroine. However, after an anonymous meeting on the Internet, a bond is formed between them.

Notting Hill

A 1999 production directed by Roger Michelle, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. It is also a comedy that, like “You’ve Got Mail”, touches on the bookstore theme. The main character is a divorced individualist who lives in the Notting Hill district of London. He owns a niche bookstore that is visited by a popular actress, Anna Scott. They grow fond of eachother but adversities constantly appear on the way. The production was nominated for a Golden Globe and won the BAFTA Audience Award for Best Picture in 2000.
