The phenomenon of Star Wars – where does this fascination for Star Warscome from?

Star Wars is a film series that found its way into the canon of adventure and science fiction cinema. The original trilogy was created in 1977-1983 and tells the story of a young boy, Luke Skywalker, who wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Jedi. The first production in this series was a huge success – to see it, you had to queue up to the cinema for several hours. The fan community grew rapidly – there were more and more fan clubs each month.

An inspiration for the uprising stellar saga was the book by Joseph Campbell – The Hero with a Thousand Faces. It was after this reading that George Lucas came up with the idea to serve the world with contemporary mythology – a work that will be timeless and will win the hearts of viewers by promoting values ​​such as love and good, as well as enchanting with its mysticism, the motive of the mysterious Power. The sentence “May the Force be with you” is to this day one of the most iconic film quotes.

Interestingly, at a time when the first Star Wars, important information was transmitted by letter or through magazines. There were no discussion groups, Social Media or internet portals where fans of the saga could get to know each other and exchange words with each other. The community involved in Star Wars , however, put a lot of effort to communicate, create fan fiction, organize rallies and popularize even more the beloved universe, despite the spatial and time barriers.

From 1980 to 1983, LucasFilm produced The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. These films, together with Star Wars: A New Hope , constitute the original Star Wars trilogy. The action of Part 5 takes place 3 years after the events of Part IV. Lord Vader sends probes to all places in the galaxy to find Luke Skywalker and drag him to the dark side. In 1997, a special edition of this film was released, featuring additional shots and CGI effects.

Star Wars Episode VI, Return of the Jedi, focuses on the final duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. The main character is already an experienced and responsible Jedi knight, just as he dreamed of it. The film won an Academy Award for Special Effects, and was nominated for Best Music, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing and Best Production Design. In 1997 and 2004 two special editions were released with additional shots and refreshed music.

Between 1999 and 2005, a trilogy of prequels was created – The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars fans consider The Phantom Menace to be the worst movie in the Star Wars universe. The production about Anakin Skywalker’s childhood was also not appreciated by critics – the film received several Golden Raspberries, including in the categories of Worst Screenplay and Worst Film.

Attack of the Clones, the chronological second part of the saga, tells the story of Anakin Skywalker, who learns under the supervision of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan. His life will turn upside down when Senator Padme Amidala stands in his way again. The film received the MTV Movie Award in the Best Fight category. Unfortunately, he also won two Golden Raspberries and was nominated in several categories for this infamous award.

Revenge of the Sith was released in 2005. The madness around the entire saga did not diminish, on the contrary, even the Jedi religion was formed (the number of followers around the world is about half a million). As for the film, it is the chronological third part of Star Wars, which tells the story of Obi-Wan and his student – Anakin Skywalker. Young Skywalker goes to the Jedi Council, and he also learns that his beloved is pregnant. Padme dies in childbirth, but fortunately their two children survive.

Part VII, The Force Awakens, was not written until 10 years after Part III of Star Wars. It is the first movie made after Lucasfilm was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. The film was directed by JJ Adams, and also produced by Bryan Burk and Kathleen Kennedy, the then president of Lucasfilm. According to Box Office Mojo, it is the fourth most profitable film in the history of cinema, after such productions as Titanic, Avengers: Endgame and Avatar.

2017 saw the premiere of Star Wars, the Last Jedi. This time, Rian Johnson, known from the series Breaking Bad and Looper. The action takes place just after the events of The Force Awakens, shooting were shot in Ireland, London and Dubrovnik. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in four categories – for Best Music, Sound, Sound Editing and Special Effects.

The last movie in the sequel trilogy, Rise of the Skywalker, premiered loudly in December 2019. The production received three Oscar nominations in categories such as Best Music, Best Sound Editing and Best Special Effects. The action of the last part of Star Wars takes place a year after the events of The Last Jedi. The ending of the saga tells the story of the final clash between the Jedi and the forces of evil.

Series from the Star Wars universe that are worth watching

In addition Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and Guardians of the Galaxy are also classified as space opera.

Do you like Star Wars? Movies aren’t the only works set in the Star Wars universe. There have also been many series from this universe. The most popular of them is undoubtedly the fresh Mandalorian. You can find Star Wars: Ewoks. The animated fairy tale consists of 35 episodes, collected in 2 seasons, and the first broadcast took place in 1985-1986. Another series referring to Star Wars is Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO. The production shook TV in the same years as Star Wars: Ewoks.

It is also worth watching the animated short series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The first was broadcast between 2003 and 2005, it consists of 25 episodes collected in three series. George Lucas is the creator and Genndy Tartakovsky is the director. Meanwhile, in 2008-2014, a series with the same title, but consisting of 121 episodes (7 seasons), was broadcast. 

Lucasfilm in cooperation with Lucasfilm Animation also released the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. The action takes place 15 years after the events of the third part of Star Wars (Revenge of the Sith). The production of 4 series (75 episodes in total) was broadcast on the Disney channel. The pilot episode premiered on the Internet in September 2014, and made its television debut a few days later, in October 2014.

Where else can you watch Star Wars? The film series interested the American corporation – Walt Disney Pictures. Not only did the giant release parts VII, VIII, IX, and the films Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Solo: A Star Wars Story, it also announced that there will be as many as 10 series from the Star Wars. Fans of the space saga got, among others, a production devoted entirely to Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as series: Star Wars: A Droid Story and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

It is also worth checking out films and series set in the world of Star Wars, produced by Lego in cooperation with Lucasfilm Animation. Two full-length productions were released in the brick version: Yoda Chronicles and Droid Tales, as well as the animated series Lego Star Wars: The Adventures of Freemakers, consisting of 26 episodes. All the above-mentioned works were created with the youngest Star Wars fans in mind.

The future Star Wars – what titles have already been announced?

What’s the future for Star Wars? More recent films include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. Both are owned by Walt Disney Pictures. The spin-offs received mixed reception from Star Wars fans and critics alike, and received numerous awards. The studio, however, gave up making more films of this type.

Star Wars fans are waiting for what new Lucasfilm comes up with. For now, it is only known that talks about starting a new trilogy are ongoing. Walt Disney Pictures has announced that three new films will be made in 2022, 2024 and 2026, but there is not much official information on this topic. All that’s left is to wait patiently for new movies from this universe, and in the meantime follow Star Wars to stay up to date.
