What is the Internet? It is a network of connections that allows data to be exchanged between different devices. Nowadays, the definition of the Internet covers virtually the entire range of services. Get to know the most important world data about the Internet and its users!

What is the Internet? Basic definition of the Internet

The Internet is a worldwide data exchange system using the IP communication protocol. This protocol is a set of actions performed automatically by devices to establish a connection and exchange data. It is a downstream protocol.

In the hardware layer, connection into one system is possible by means of hosts and servers with transmitting and receiving devices. The first are all devices that enable data exchange and use of network services (e.g. e-mail boxes). Examples of such devices are computers, tablets, smartphones, consoles and smart TVs. Servers are used to provide these data and services. Transceiver devices are modems and routers that transmit signals from the telecommunications infrastructure to individual devices.

Internet – Internet network, www. Details of the operation of the Internet

The concept inextricably linked with the Internet is WWW. It is an abbreviation for the World Wide Web. Often the terms “Internet” and “WWW” are treated as synonyms, however this is a mistake. We can divide the Internet into two components. The first is the Internet network, i.e. the system of data exchange between hosts and servers described above. In other words, it is a global network of interconnected computers.

WWW is a web service that is a collection of this data. The WWW service is an Internet application that uses the higher-order HTTP protocol. It is a support layer for your data. It sends a request to make them available, which is carried out with the help of the WWW service.

In other words, using the IP protocol it is possible to communicate with the global Internet network full of interconnected devices. The HTTP protocol is responsible for downloading website data and displaying them on the screen of e.g. a smartphone or computer.

How to turn on the Internet, i.e. what are the ways to connect to the network?

internet - what is it

The most common way to connect to a network is to use a modem or router. The information on the Internet will then be transferred between the provider and the user in a safe and good quality manner. Currently, access to the Internet is common and there is no major problem with connecting your household to the network. Fiber-optic Internet is gaining popularity, which allows for faster data transfer, as well as competitive prices.

How to turn on the Internet? The ways will differ depending on whether you are using a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer. The network package can be sold as a card, topped up or connected via cable (if you have a computer or laptop).

What are the possibilities of the Internet? What are its advantages?

The Internet is considered by many people the best invention. No wonder, it is thanks to this network that you can chat with friends, send various graphics without worrying about their quality, and order various products with home delivery. What are the possibilities of the Internet and what positive can you gain by discovering its new functionalities?

  • Quick access to a variety of information from every corner of the world, easy finding answers in the field of both general and specialist knowledge.
  • Direct contact with family and friends, as well as external entities – the possibility of using social networks, social media and e-mail.
  • Making online purchases – products can be ordered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in addition, the possibility of choosing a convenient form of collection, as well as a multitude of payment methods.
  • Entertainment – you also have to remember that using the Internet is fun. You can watch funny movies or photos, but also listen to music. Connecting to the network guarantees a lot of solutions to spend your free time.
  • Reaching a wide audience (for example via social media) – this solution is particularly important in digital marketing or the e-commerce industry. The Internet allowed the opening of online businesses, which is gaining more and more followers to this day.

What about internet security? What are the disadvantages and risks?

Nowadays, the internet is used for various activities. It is used by both children and older users. People who are not thoroughly familiar with the rules of the Internet can run into trouble. Browsing the internet can provide great entertainment, but it can also put users at risk.

What to do to stay safe on the internet anyway? First of all, it should be remembered that the public network is only seemingly anonymous. Any actions you perform are continuously recorded. Even so, you don’t know exactly who is sitting on the other side of the monitor. Remember that, do not reveal your sensitive data and the Internet will surely be a friendly place for you.

What are the disadvantages and risks of using the Internet?

  • Difficult to verify the content that appears – making it more difficult to check the reliability and authenticity of a specific article. Better not to base all your knowledge on sources found online.
  • No anonymity and on the other hand not knowing who is on the other side of the screen.
  • The risk of data leakage, which reduces the sense of security during purchasing transactions or logging in to online banking.

Internet in the world – some statistical data

What are the statistics describing the Internet in the world? A turning point in the history of the development of this network in Europe was 2007. It was then that more than half of the inhabitants of the European Union Member States declared access to the Internet. In 2019, the percentage of households connected to the grid increased to 90%. The research was carried out by Eurostat.

In 2019, the Netherlands reported that 98% of households in this region had internet access. An equally high percentage of users was recorded, inter alia, in Sweden, Finland and Luxembourg – 9 out of 10 households have access to the Internet. Bulgaria has the lowest percentage of people with internet access. Only 75% of residents declared that they are permanently connected to the selected server.

How did it start? The First Years of the Internet

Although 1969 is considered the beginning of the Internet, its history dates back to 1958. The ARPA organization then created the ARPANET network. Joseph Licklider, the originator of the creation of a computer network, participated in the work. So why is only the next decade considered the proper beginning of the Internet? Only then were the appropriate nodes connecting the four units in America (including UCLA California, an important point in the history of the Internet). Three years later, Paul Baran published a paper on digital data transmission networks. It was spread over 12 volumes. It is said that it was designed to be able to survive World War II. This performance was commissioned by the American Armed Forces.

Since then, the network has been constantly expanded and improved. More and more scientists decide to develop new features related to the functioning of the Internet. As a result, users can expect new functions even every day!
